  •  There are a lot of wingnuts mad about this. (17+ / 0-)

You're wrong if you think otherwise.  Even Sarah Palin, that paragon of wisdom, and Glenn Beck, that other paragon of whatever, have spoken out against the NSA domestic spying.

And it makes sense.  Even if it's a flip-flop from the George W. Bush days on the part, it's still a welcome and sensible flip-flop.

If you believe -- as they believe today, about Obama, and we believed about Bush and possibly the next president, as well -- that the president is not a reliably moral machine that can always be trusted, that the president actually oversees all this shit and actively tries to prevent abuses at the micro level -- then it makes sense to condemn this.

Fine.  We finally agree on something with the right.  You shouldn't trust big government with this kind of power.

    •  Palin and Beck are only condemning this (7+ / 0-)

because they believe it's Obama that'll be in the hot seat.  If these revelations were happening under McCain or Romney, you'd hear crickets, or perhaps a full-throated defense of the programs, 'cuz freedums n' turrurists.

The fact that they ignored it under Bush and condemn it now is useless, just as Dems who were appalled at it under Bush but support it under Obama aren't helping the matter.

Think it through.  We didn't trust Bush.  When he started the NSA spying, we went nuts about it.  We didn't trust him with that kind of power.  The right were quite happy to see it the administration's way because it was their guy.

The roles have reversed now.  And some on the right are realizing, "Oh shit, you mean a black anti-christ Kenyan from outer space can spy on all of us?  I don't like that!"

Kind of late to be just now figuring that out, eh?  And yet, as if to make up for it, there are now people here, on the left, that are SUPPORTING the same policies and programs (and often the same people, too, like Brennan and Clapper) that they opposed under Bush because, just as the right is MORE worried when it's not their guy, some people here are less worried when it's our guy.

And that's not a good basis for making judgments.  If you are concerned that this president OR the past president OR the next president might not be trustworthy with these kinds of powers, then you should be in the same boat in wanting this curbed or stopped completely.
