the fact that Julian Assange is accused of rape?

Who the hell cares what Stephanopolis vs Assange has to say.

The man is accused of rape.  I have no idea if the charges are legitimate or not, but why are we here at Kos deifying this man who is fighting extradition on rape charges?

I'm waiting for someone, anyone to give me a good answer.

    •  It's politics, my friend. (0+ / 0-)

Assange is propped up by many on the left (not me) as a hero, and thus every accusation isn't even worth considering. If he was anyone else DKos members would be forming a mob calling for further investigation and a trial.

Similarly, Bradley Manning got in trouble for punching a girl in the face. He also pulled a knife on his step-mother. If any other man commits acts of violence against women DKos as a whole wants him burned at the stake. Manning? Crickets.

      Please proceed, Governor.

      •  Except you are wrong. (11+ / 0-)

The issue of Assange's alleged rape incident has been debated numerous times on Daily Kos with many calling for his accountability including me, and this has nothing to do with the subject of discussion here or the facts of that.

But I'm not surprised you are offering up the usual ad hominem arguments you do in such discussions here, it's become quite predictable.

        •  What ad hominem? (0+ / 0-)

Someone else brought it up and I commented on it without relating it to the diary topic. People do branch off into side discussions.

If you want to see my on-topic opinion it's in another post.

          Please proceed, Governor.

        •  So, you dismiss the charge of rape as an (0+ / 0-)

"incident?" And that it has nothing to do with the "subject of discussion here or the facts of that?"

Sorry, but I think there are a ton of women out there who would beg to disagree with you.

Assange's politics do NOT in any way dismiss the seriousness of charges against him, nor should they.

I'm just about as liberal as they come, but when it comes to excusing rape because the person accused of it is politically of my persuasion, count me out.

There is NO excuse for rape.

    •  Yes, but what does that have to do (10+ / 0-)

With the subject he was interviewed about?

Here is your good answer: he should be held accountable for the alleged rape and has suggested how the process could proceed, and it has nothing to do with the facts Wikileaks or Snowden reveled.

    •  we take note tht whenever someone (5+ / 0-)

says something that you and other Obame extremist supprots you try to character assassinate, yes.

      •  "character assassination" implies (0+ / 0-)

        making untrue accusations.

Julian Assange IS wanted on rape charges. Let me ask you a question. If it were anyone else, would you demand that person go back and face the charges?

I will grant you this has nothing to do with whether or not TIME or Assange is telling the truth, but that doesn't negate the validity of the question.

        Please proceed, Governor.

    •  Uh, it might have to do with the fact that (7+ / 0-)

the two people who accused him of having sex with them with a damaged/or/no condom both were consensually intimate with him immediately before the alleged incidents, and were partying with him in public AFTER the alleged incidents, and that at least one of the accusers is connected to the CIA, and that he is not CHARGED with any crime - there is a warrant issued for questioning - but the Swedish authorities refuse to question him anywhere but in Sweden, although he has offered to meet with them and answer questions on neutral ground where he cannot be seized and renditioned to the CIA.

That said - he may well be a creep - but he'd have to be crazy to submit himself to possible rendition to the not-so-tender-mercies of the US intel establishment.

      •  Oh God. Really? We're at this point now? (0+ / 0-)

The CIA connection thing was addressed above by someone else.

And really, if they were intimate with him before the rapes occurred, and were seen with him in public afterwards, so fucking what?  That means they weren't raped?

You are basically saying "Well, she shouldn't have worn that dress."

    •  Not convinced (0+ / 0-)

The "victim" had ties to the CIA.

      •  This was addressed above. (0+ / 0-)

The "ties" seem to be tenuous at best.

And even if she did have CIA ties, people with CIA ties can't be raped?

Why is it that when it comes to Assange, it's suddenly acceptable to refer to rape victims with quotes around the word victim?

    •  You're looking at it the wrong way, I think... (3+ / 0-)

... #1: Assange's personal failings have little or nothing to do with wikileaks's message, ideology and revelations. The fact that the Roman Catholic Church appears to be full of pedophiles doesn't mean that you should throw the 10 commandments out of the window.

#2: Right now, we mostly heard from the prosecution (on the Swedish side); we could also take Assange's defense attornet's word for it that he is innocent, if you'd like, and the two claims would cancel each other neatly on this forum. Until there is a real trial and Assange and his accusers (who in candor strike me as severely lacking in credibility) have been properly questioned by prosecutors and defense attorneys, neither the pro- or the anti-Assange have the higher ground. In other words both yoiur statement and my hypothetical proclaiming of Assange's innocence should be dismissed and ignored.

#3: I was given to understand (I could be wrong) that Assange was willing to return to Sweden to be tried if the Swedish Government made a clearcut, public and unambiguous statement that in no way shape or form would he be extradited to the US. As far as i know, we're still waiting for such a statement.
