Both De Mint and Reed are actually from former Confederate states, SC and VA, the homes of nullification and secession (SC), and Massive Resistance to school desegregation (VA), where the Lost Cause, Confederate battle flags, voter suppression, Creationism, God, Guns, and Gays, and the rest of the apparatus of resistance to the War of Northern Aggression and Tyranny!! are still strong.

It is pointless to complain when someone points out the activities of Unreconstructed Rebels in our politics, particularly given the presence of Alabama Sen. Jefferson [Davis] [Pierre August Toutant] Beauregard Sessions III. Even if Pennsylvania can correctly be described as Philadelphia and Pittsburg, with Alabama in the middle. Even if Indiana Gov. Mike Pence can correctly be described as the darling of the Rednecks up from Kentucky. (And yes, I do know that Kentucky stayed in the Union. It was a near thing.)

And yes, we should recognize the existence of Progressives in the South, as in To Kill a Mockingbird and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe. I have done so, in Diaries such as

    The Young South is Ours

    Neil Gaiman on Anti-South Prejudice

and more. You should Diary your own experiences within the movement more. We hear about Wendy Davis and Battleground Texas, about Moral Mondays in North Carolina, and about brave battles to keep abortion clinics open in Mississippi and Alabama and so forth, but we need to hear how to turn the rest of the old Confderacy Blue from those doing the work. Not complaints about legitimate comments.

Don't tell us you're better than that. Show us.
