The example I have been using a lot lately is the Rural Electric Coops.  Back in the infancy of electrification the electric companies said it was too expensive to run power lines to farms and rural communities.   So with the help of low interest government loans, and some favorable policies, the rural community banded together and formed rural electric coops.  Quite often the farmers set the poles and strung the wires themselves since they had labor but little capital.  In the end once they got power the rural people figured out there was a whole lot of stuff you could run with electricity.  Pretty soon the meters were spinning and the electric companies have been trying to get control of coops ever since.
