    who recreate a night at the nickelodeon, which is basically movies before features. Films are three to twenty minutes, with vaudeville acts between. The singers are accompanied by one piano and magic lantern slides. Without fail, the last slide has the lyrics to the chorus, and the house joins in. The songs are odd and obscure novelty things, for the most part [created to sell sheet music - Irving Berlin didn't need 'em] but people struggle through them and evidently have a great time doing so.

    I guess the end of the line for sing-alongs was the "follow-the-bouncing-ball" cartoon shorts, which died out [it says here] in the early '50s. Mitch Miller put up lyrics on his TV show ['61-'64], but doing it at home isn't quite the same.
