        Lots of valuable Revolutionary War era documents were lost in Georgia and the Carolinas due to the Sherman's "bummers."

        On the other hand, actively shifting slave owners off their land and giving the land to the slaves, and otherwise aggressively promoting the Freedman's Bureau would have gone a long way to destroying the old Southern order for good.

        But then, Sherman wasn't a political man.
