  •  Shopping for health care?! (5+ / 0-)

I have actually had people say this to me, as if when you need your appendix out or have cancer you are going to sit around waiting for competing bids and getting information on costs. Does any person in this country have any idea of what the costs will be when they need care? Of course not. It's not possible. It is not possible for the medical facilities to tell you what your costs will be, because an illness in a process, not an object. It is completely unpredictable what your body will do. Even physicians know that. And if they had to describe to you the procedures that you MIGHT need, they could never predict every possibility. Furthermore, no layperson even understands what these medical procedures are!

You would think people would understand this concept just from dealing with mechanics when they get their car repaired. Even a good mechanic never knows what he will find when he gets into the engine. You don't need competing bids for car repair, you need a trustworthy mechanic! Do you really want to go with the doctor who lowballs you? It baffles me that people can say things like this and actually believe it!

To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour. - William Blake
