someone points out that middle class teenagers working summer jobs don't deserve that wage.  Or the more articulate will point out that higher minimum wages hurt the poor/minorities worse.

Me, I look at the suggested rates, and some times see stories about WalMart workers making $10 to $12 an hour and scratch my head since EMT's average $10 an hour nationally and they save lives.

In our last contract we go EMT's paid $12.50 an hour and had to give up several steps in pay rates.  (Now you move up a step after three years rather than every year for the first three years, every two years for the next 10)

And we got told by our Reps this was a "great" contract.  They said they could not get us more because the tax money just was not there. And it included a clause that says if minimum wage goes up, we don't get a corresponding increase like we use to.  Hiking MW to $16 per hour would mean lay offs.

Stupid question hour starts now and ends in five minutes.

    •  That shows what this country values (5+ / 0-)

      and what it doesn't.

And what it doesn't value is far, far more telling.

higher minimum wages benefit entire communities. Anyone who denies this is lying.

I don't have the links immediately to hand, but the NYT has repeatedly done stories about this over the past decade, and what the reporters found was that areas with higher minimum wage laws also had more-than-average thriving economies.

Turns out Henry Ford was right: when you pay your employees enough to afford your cars, your business sells more cars. Substitute "widgets" for cars and you've got the dynamic.

The rich and their toadies in D.C. know this damn well. They are just working to turn the rest of us into serfs.

Now they just want to be able to order everyone around to feed their egos.

They especially want to order girls/women around, to make them feel like strong, big, manly men. (sarcasm, with truth)
