There are a lot of parallels between the 5-4 Roe v Wade and the 5-4 Heller v DC. In each case a closely split SCOTUS  declared that in the fist case a woman had a fundamental constitutional right to have an abortion, subject to some limits, and in the second case that individuals have a fundamental right to own firearms, subject to some restrictions. Now, as progressives we oppose any state imposed restrictions on abortion, however most progressives are pleased to see states pass more restrict gun control laws. Those who oppose abortion believe that the act of performing an abortion is murder and so they feel it is appropriate to have states restrict them in any way possible. Progressives feel that the flood of guns in the US causes deaths, intentional or accidental, and are pleased to see states restrict them in any way possible.

It's not so hard to see that people's views of Supreme Court decisions, and the rights of states, has to do with the specific issue at hand rather than some overarching political philosophy.

    •  Gun rights really? (4+ / 0-)

There's nothing about any state's gun policy that might conflict with federal prerogatives, unless as is the case here the legislation attempts to dictate what the Federal agents may or may not do. If you are suggesting state restrictions on guns are illegitimate because Second Amendment then that is a different (and crazier) ball of wax.

Abortion is a different matter because the SCOTUS says it is. The SCOTUS says that the previous hodgepodge of different states declaring abortion illegal while others allowed was untenable. Your gun policy analogy only works if there were states attempting to ban or otherwise criminalize gun ownership (which has never been attempted by any state). But it's still a crap analogy because of the different species of weaponry (and therefore potentially mitigating arguments), whereas there's only one way to have a baby.

Maybe best not to presume to speak in generalities about what progressives think.

    •  And let's talk about the other side of this (3+ / 0-)

A big part of this is throwing raw meat to their base.

They want to be able to say the only thing keeping the liberals from taking your guns is us; the only thing keeping the liberals from killing more babies is us. Put that way, the choice is easy. It's about having enemies to blame for everything that's wrong in the world.

Forget roads full of potholes, water not safe to drink, schools that are deteriorating, bridges falling down, rising inequality, climate change, etc. etc. Their base doesn't think government can do anything about any of this, or doesn't believe it should.

But taking guns and killing babies - that they can understand. Those people, living off government hand outs - that they can understand. Drug gangs terrorizing the borders and creating crime in the streets, that they can understand.

And so on and so on. It's a powerful narrative and they've been polishing it for years. Turn on the radio, turn on FOX NEWS and the message gets reinforced 24/7.

"No special skill, no standard attitude, no technology, and no organization - no matter how valuable - can safely replace thought itself."

their credibility by trying to pass laws like a new AWB.
