  •  Of course, DeadHead is correct, however... (5+ / 0-)

...'involvement' is such a benign euphemism for what we have done in -- how do we Americans like to refer to the region? -- Aw, yes -- what we have done in our own back yard.  Somehow, even 'sticking it to them' is a woefully inadequate euphemism to describe the horrors we're responsible for inflicting on them over the course of history.

Your comment is greatly appreciated for it's reflection of the typical American attitude regarding the region, and also for reflecting your scholarly erudition wrt to the countries of that region constantly and gleefully sticking it to us.

I figured I needed to make it as simple as possible. ;)

    •  did I ever say the US was innocent? (0+ / 0-)

No I didn't but thank you for inventing that argument and beating it though I am pretty sure that's actually a strawman

How about you answer my comment instead of the imaginary conversation you seem to be having?

Oh and btw I'll take my scholarly erudition any time over the ignorance you have so far demonstrated.

...I expect an official government reaction to the offers of asylum for Snowden, but the casual disregard for the actual harm that's been inflicted by us on those countries combined with the pitiful, self-serving complaint that THEY like sticking it to US, is nauseating coming from a Northeastern Democrat with the last name Menendez.

You must have missed it.  It pretty much lays out my specific objection to Sen. Menendez's characterization of just who sticks it to who and the twisted logic one must engage in in order to justify such a David and Goliath scenario.  Moreover, I stated that it is not unreasonable and obviously anticipated that a responsible government statement would be put forward regarding Snowden's asylum-seeking.

So please whack away at YOUR strawman creation and continue to rely on your erudition over my ignorance -- it has yet to fail you.

        •  it's the game of nations (0+ / 0-)

I am not saying you should like it but it's just a fact that the game of nations has been going on for thousands of years and likely will continue for thousands more.

I'd love for that to change but there are fundamental reasons that is unlikely to happen

You don't want to deal with my comment? Have the honesty  to just say so.

          •  The game of nations... (2+ / 0-)

...should be played out by adults who don't distort history, duhban.  I'm not making the case that there should be NO official response or pre-emptive challenge to any nation offering Snowden asylum.  It's as clear as the nose in the middle of my face that the administration does not want any of those countries providing shelter to Snowden.  I can and do accept that they are going to try and persuade those countries not to give him shelter.

However, it is unwise and impolitic for a member of Congress -- a Democrat, no less -- to make ham-handed, history-revising, statements which are bound to offend ALL the nations in Central and South America and hurt American credibility with those countries which have nothing to do with L'affaire Snowden.

As someone who knows a little something about the history of Central and South America, Menendez's statement does NOTHING to sway me to believe that WE are handling this particular situation diplomatically...and the reaction of those nations makes it quite clear that his statement adds insult to REAL injury we have inflicted upon most, if not ALL of those countries in that region.

The Game of Nations is not being well-played by Sen. Menendez.

            •  and as someone that knows a little something (0+ / 0-)

about the history of Central and South America I can tell you I don't find it ham handed.

At some point you can't blame history for where you are and who you choose to allow to represent you. And frankly I think we are well past that point.

...indifferent comments I have read regarding the actual history of Central and South America and the actual exploitation and barbarity we have repeatedly inflicted upon those nations.

I completely understand your point of view, and I categorically denounce it.  You started this thread in an insulting manner, and you have managed to sink even lower in my esteem.  I don't expect that to bother you in the least, but I don't think that continuing this exchange will serve any purpose.

If you care to have the last word, I gladly give you the floor.  There will be no reply.

                •  don't pretend you know me (0+ / 0-)

You don't and don't pretend you can understand enough about my opinions on Central or South America in a couple of comments to even have half a clue whether I am callous or not.

You objected to a senator who while on the whole I wish he had kept his mouth shut raised some very valid points.

You are the one that choose to get insulting by attacking my character and my knowledge. And now you are switching to passive by claiming to be the victim.

I don't like dealing with passive aggressive people so yes  this 'exchange' is probably not serving much purpose.

                  You have a good day

Here's your initial comment, since you seem to have forgotten the sequence of events:

you must not read a lot of news about South

America cause then you would know that in fact most of those nations love to 'stick it to the US' (to use the words offered) by either acting tough on to the US or offering the US as a scape goat.

Really I am amazed by the naivety being expressed that the United States would even dare express their displeasure.

Have you ever taken a history class? This is like basic nations relations 101. Any nation accepting Snowden shouldn't expect the United States to be pleasantly disposed to it any more then when any other wanted fugitive flees to a country offering to hide them.

This is about as much news as Snowden's 'omg the NSA is spying on other nations' "revalation"

You started things off with an asshole comment. Not that you'll acknowledge it.

and yet you are okay with reccing comments calling me a troll?

You should just shut up you hypocrite.

Because in both instances it's the truth. That hardly makes me a hypocrite. In fact, it makes me rather consistent.
