    with constant "compromises" that give the nutbags everything they want and constantly undermine the interests of your own base of support.  

    That, in fact, is exactly what happened to the Whigs.  It wasn't the extremist party, the slavery Democrats, that disappeared.  It was the consummately centrist Whigs, whose constant "pragmatic compromises" allowed the continual expansion of the slave power, that died on the vine, due to their own (very, very "pragmatic") ineffectiveness.  Once a more militant resistance to the anti-egalitarian, anti-libertarian, anti-democratic Democratic Party emerged, the Whigs, for all their "centrism" and "pragmatism" disappeared in the twinkling of an eye when the Republicans took on the one great task, limiting the slave power, that America had asked of the Whigs.
