    yes, the San Francisco Sound was a lot more than just the Airplane, Dead, and Janis.

    Moby Grape was sort of the odd band out, considered inauthentic by some for having been put together by a manager & given a big advance, but also for playing short, tight songs. If you don't like the meandering psychedelica of "Section 43" or "Bass Strings," try the Grape's "Hey, Grandma," an ode to, among other things, Robitussin and elderberry wine (one combination I managed not to try). But really, there isn't a bad song on the first MG album.

    Incidentally, aging Gen-Xers who remember Camper van Beethoven might have heard that band's great cover of the Fish song "Porpoise Mouth."
