That's the main thing their followers don't want to face.

I know preachers and gospel singers, and the fact is, a lot of 'em are secretly Marjoe Gortner types -- they don't even believe in a god, they just found a way to make money off of those who do.   If you've never seen the documentary Marjoe, seek it out -- he's far from the only one doing that kind of thing.   They make a lot of money doing that stuff, and it's tax-free.  It's like a scam, but it's not entirely a scam... they're giving the congregation what they want.  Church is primarily a social network and a form of entertainment.  The people want to be told these things, and it doesn't really matter if the preacher believes what he's saying or not -- he's playing the role they want to see, and they're paying for what they wanted.

I'm a hardcore atheist but I don't fully resent all preachers making money.   They're showmen.  And, more than that, they're like sin-eaters.  One preacher I know is constantly drained because he's surrounded by followers who want something from him, even if it's just to be listened to and acknowledged.  They're like psychic vampires and he's paid to be their victim... and it does drain him.  It also fattens the fuck out of his bank account, though... but, he's earning it;  I couldn't put up with the parasitism he has to deal with.
