    You put a CD/DVD or USB stick in a computer and it automatically runs a program on it. It's a good model for users who have no clue how to open the folder for the media to find the program to run. It's an awful awful thing for security because the computer will run whatever malware is on the drive without the user's knowledge.

    Step 1 for securing even air gapped systems is to DISABLE AUTORUN. Extremely secure systems might simply disable mounting of all media (autorun or not) except for in carefully controlled situations.
