    has always struck me as pretty creepy and Stasi-ish. But there are times when it's useful, so kudos to the people who dropped a dime (or whatever) on this creepy-looking guy.

    •  It's not creepy in an urban environment (5+ / 0-)

      like New York, or in a public park, where hundreds or thousands of people might walk past a back-pack like the ones the Boston bombers used.

      People leave stuff unattended and walk off. Maybe they went to the bathroom, maybe they simply forgot it.

      The "If you see something, say something" doesn't necessarily mean you call the police. It means you tell someone. You ask the others sitting there, "Is this your bag?" "Did you see who left this bag?" Or you tell the venue, "There is an unattended bag over there next to the door."
      Or you tell the train conductor, "There is an unattended bag in the last car."

      "If you see something, say something." It's simply an invitation to be aware of what's going around you.
