  •  Roll Call's retirement watch looks (1+ / 0-)

at weak fundraising reports as a sign of potential retirement.

Most concerning name is Collin Peterson. GOP had publicly encouraged him to retire earlier this year, and he said it made him want to do the opposite. But he only raised 94k in the second quarter.

Romney won this seat 54-44, so it would be a tough hold without Peterson, who easily won 60-35 in 2012.

This is a normal haul for Peterson in the off year. He's never been a prolific fundraiser but he's also never had to have been. Also, money goes a long way in his district.

I did just see a tweet today from a MN journalist who had talked to State Senator Torrey Westrom (R) about rumors of him running for congress against Peterson. His response was "I'll give you the canned answer of 'no comment.'" Westrom represents SD12, which is in west central MN. This is his first term in the Senate, but he served in the house for about 20 years. He used to have the nickname of "Boy Wonder" as he won his house seat at the age of 23. He also has a compelling personal story as he was born blind. His SD is pretty strongly Republican, but his old house seat was only slightly so. The house district that takes in most of his old seat was actually won by a DFLer last year, but it did move several points to the left.

about running for another term. But here's hoping he stays on for another cycle.

      •  But that article was back in May (0+ / 0-)

didn't he say more recently that he's leaning towards running again?

But there was recent article that basically said that Peterson was pissed of with the farm bill fiasco and it made it look like he was rethinking about running for another term.

          •  Didn't he have the same reaction last time around (0+ / 0-)

and it's hardly proactive to retire and put his district at risk of takeover by yet another obstacle to a Farm Bill.

No word on what he feels about running again.  But, as I said, retiring would only be counter-productive to his efforts on the Farm Bill since he would be replaced either with a Republican blocker or a Democrat with no seniority.
