  •  So write off women's and LGBT rights (7+ / 0-)

Democratic Party cedes those to bigoted GOP?

No thanks. Women sat down in 2010 thanks to Garrison, and we don't need that again. Some people here really do not understand the degree to which she was responsible for our losing the governorship in 2010.

Her first appearance up here in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) when she was running for secretary of state was a debacle. When her name was announced people booed (poor Kevin Boyce, who was announcing the ticket, was completely baffled) and a group of women stood and turned their backs when she spoke. They tried to organize a fundraiser for her up here and could not find one single person to be on the host committee.

So they brought her up to try to charm several of our key women activists. One of them posted a screed on Facebook afterward with a litany of things she disagreed with that went far beyond just her radical anti-choice positions. The women told the party "We won't support here, we won't raise money for her and we won't even vote for her."

They yanked her off the ticket after that and replaced her with an excellent candidate — Franklin County (Columbus) clerk of courts Maryellen O'Shaughnessy. She worked hard but it was just to short a time for her to make any inroads.

We've had plenty of other choices in this district over the years. We do not need to go crawling to a candidate who supports stripping women of their rights and blocking LGBT people from having them. Ted Strickland, who represented this district, did not. Lou Gentile, who is thinking about running here also, does not.

advocate that progressives would find objectionable?

What candidate can we support that would be a 'better' Dem on all of the issues of concern?

          •  Sure. Guns. (0+ / 0-)

            It's southeastern rural Appalachia.

But this is not a litmus test issue for me, and it played very very well for Ted Strickland, who is a very pro-gun guy.  I wasn't enamored of that but he was a good governor.

Everyone wants to sit around and complain about the centrist and right leaning candidates the DCCC puts forward (in a red district), let's come up with someone we CAN support.
It's a red district, but not by much. We have to get people to support the right candidates, but that's hard to do when there isn't one.

“We are not a nation that says ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ We are a nation that says ‘out of many, we are one.’” -Barack Obama
