  •  Instinct-driven people recognize each other (3+ / 0-)

on some subconscious level -- like dogs can recognize other dogs, regardless of how weird people have made them look.
Anyway, instinct-driven people are creatures of habit who repeat what they hear and copy what they see. Indeed, I'd argue that imitation (which they call the sincerest form of flattery) is what introduces novel behaviors into their repertoire.
The habit of repeating what they hear is what throws Democratic politicians off. Because the instinct-driven do not discriminate. When someone says something that goes over well with an audience, they repeat it, regardless of who said it first. Concluding that they mean it or have adopted a new position is a mistake. A new talking point does not a commitment make.
For a candidate whose got well thought out positions, it is really disconcerting to have them parroted back. So, there's a temptation to drop the issue -- another mistake since it gives the press a reason to shout "inconsistent." The instinct-driven do not worry about consistency because they always follow their gut. They FEEL and feelings, everybody that has them knows, are fleeting and variable, but always trustworthy. Feelings are the keys to the magic kingdom.

What instinct-driven people don't do is follow through or deliver or act. This is actually a plus when they are promising distress. But, promises to perform that haven't been met should be relentlessly pointed out. Also, that paying people to do a job they don't carry out is to support waste, fraud and abuse. Republicans can rail against it because they know exactly what it is. Do they respect the citizens who let them get away with it? Not hardly.
If the electorate wants to be suckered by time-serving legislators, that's their choice, but it's not what's on offer from Democrats.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.

"feelings" and "gut feelings" that the right likes to promote as the source of bad policy, they sure do have a tizzy when our side talks about our "feelings" about their crap polices. Not to mention that our "feelings" are regarded as hippy dippy bs when it comes to social welfare for the common good and their "feelings" of individualism (and I would say tribalism) should trump the majority will. Because our ideas are dfh ideas....
