  •  Real pee in a cup filibuster is what it SHOULD be (8+ / 0-)

No matter which party holds the Senate.

You want to filibuster? Fine. Then get the cots, order up the pizzas, and whip out the phonebooks to read from. No saying "Filibuster!" and then hitting the links with your campaign donors!

I've been saying this for YEARS!

    •  Better anyway. The power is supposed to reside (6+ / 0-)

in the people. A real honest-to-God filibuster "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" style is an event.  It's something to educate and something to rally round.

A real filibuster is designed to get people off their butts and contacting their representatives. In that way, it is a decent check on the tyranny of the majority: "Look bub, I voted for you, but I didn't vote for you to do this.  Cool your jets."

The quiet little back room filibusters do nothing but frustrate democracy.  They are the legislative equivalent of drone warfare.

      •  Not only that (5+ / 0-)

But they're hidden. Stuff goes nowhere, and the public has no clue who's stopping it.

A talking filibuster makes it clear who is stopping it, and often why. It might be a really valid point, and one most people agree with, but they'll only know if somebody is on the floor talking.

This back room silent crap has got to go.

        •  I'm thinking the one done in Texas (0+ / 0-)

Made the threat of forcing them to do a real filibuster, with all the attention that will paid to it while they try to justify what they are doing, something for the right wingers to think about.

After all, if they are expected to actually get up there and explain themselves, people might actually start listening.

I mean everyone, not just wonky people. It could turn into a reality show that is real - one where people really want a vote because it affects them.
