    of Asian media types.

According to the always reliable Wikipedia he was invented by Earl Biggers as a way to do something opposite of the "yellow peril" stories that he felt had been way overdone by the 1920's.

I've been watching the Charlie Chan movies on youtube lately and two things strike me...

-many times Charlie Chan seems exploit the white culture's instinctive underestimation of him to his advantage.  They don't notice he's being clever until he has them cornered.

-There's always at least one of his children in these films as sidekicks and they are always played as 100% fresh apple pie American kids. No accent, no corny aphorisms.
