      of man's inhumanity to man drove him to drink and parties...

      i believe he would have dissipated himself to some degree with drinks and parties regardless of his literary endeavors.  it was the life he wanted to leave.

      gore could be quite bitchy in skewering what he portrayed as capote's mania for social climbing and attention.
