can leave a big mess - beer cans, trash, coolers, clothing, etc.

It gets very congested, this is the closest river to St. Louis for float trips, just about an hour's drive from the city, so it gets a lot of traffic.  Certain areas around Steeleville, past the intersection with the Huzzah River, can literally have so many floaters you could walk from one side of the river to the other without getting wet.  Personally, if I were a privacy freak, like Crocker, I wouldn't buy property on the river there, or I would stay away for the summer.

They do have water patrols by the game wardens, etc. but it sounds like they need more. I'm surprised this guy wasn't caught before he hurt someone. Republicans in the MO legislature have been cutting the budget like crazy, though.

Long before the floaters became such a nuisance. Hell, he might have inherited the property. It's not impossible.

      boaters and floaters.

In the west, most boaters are pretty schooled in river etiquette and no one minds having them around. Floaters, however, come in two types: sweet family sorts who are experiencing the river for the first time and just have to be educated, and rowdy drunks or stoners who are there just to party.

It's the latter folks causing the problems for both of the former.

can leave a big mess. I used to live in Crawford Co. Steelville is a nasty, scummy outlaw town and always has been. If you are from the area, maybe you, too, are old enough to remember "The Ozark Playground" on Hwy 19 just inside the Crawford County line. It was the place for a good fight on Saturday night.

There are hundreds of shanties, broken down single-wides, and dead vehicles along the river. Sure, there are inconsiderate floaters and boaters, but most of the residents are no better.
