I well remember the murky, wet day that marked the first flight of #1. Every single Seattle TV station had it live, and most of the bigger radio stations had live commentary too. That was a Sunday too, so Boeing had the maximum number of employes and their families there, and the rest of the Puget Sound region as their audience in fact.

I was enthralled (just about to turn 10), and my entire family watched that short flight with all the concentration and hope we could muster. A truly great day in the end.

I've only flown on one '47, and that was from JFK to FRA and back, on Singapore. Excellent flights, and incredible service - their economy class treatment was more like a domestic first class ride.

One of my best friends works at Boeing today, and he's managed to stay employed and valuable over a couple layoff cycles, meaning he's got an actual career going. He's the group manager for 777 and 747 seats and interiors, and deals with customer's design and implementation of those parts. The only bad thing: he flies too much for meetings, an example being he had to fly to India for a one day meeting. There went an entire week of travel, meeting, and jet lag. No, they don't do phone calls or videos, at his level they're required to the face-to-face meetings.

And yeah, I know tarantulas don't really act like that at all, so no snarking, this is the internet damnit!

....I could NOT afford it! (I am a Director of a London-based aviation charitable body, and the Chairman works out of China!)

One of the seat suppliers' factory is in south Wales, and about two years ago he was detailed to spend six months there continuously. I know it was a burden (someone has to drink all that good Welsh beer!), and they even flew his wife and daughter over for about six weeks in the summer. He really regretted that, as they spent a lot of time shopping in London and going to West End shows while he worked.

On the plus side, he hiked the Brecon Beacons quite a bit and he may have climbed Snowden, I can't remember. He's a bit of a nut for peaks, so if there is one handy, he'll climb it.
