...at.  Why does France and many other European nations have higher numbers of people employed by small business (the US is 17th in small business in the OECD)?

Because it's easier to start a small business when you're not worried about where your healthcare is coming from.

If you had socialized healthcare, you could take your college degree and put it to work doing something amazing.  You could teach in the inner city.  You could work as a community organizer.  You could work for social justice.  You could do an undercover journalism story about some terrible isue you care about.

You could do that all because you wouldn't have to worry about health insurance.  You could do what you care about, even if it pays $20,000 a year because your health and welfare are guaranteed by the state.

They don't want you doing those things.  They want you accepting the first shitty job you get offered and feeling fortunate to have a third rate HMO.  They want you so scared of losing the table scraps they give you that you'll shut the fuck up and not rock the boat.

Can you imagine a world where everyone has the freedom to do the things that are most important to them?  The things that they truly believe are important.

The GOP can, and it scares the shit out of them.

One day I am really hoping to make the jump to writing full time. But not only do I have to replace my existing decent salary as a chemist for 25 years, I also have to add another $10,000 a year or so to pay for health insurance. It makes the jump that much bigger.

My wife is a professional freelance photographer so she's in the same boat. My job keeps us both in health insurance.
