    I have lived abroad, including in Russia, and not as military, but as a student and later as a "businessman" (I can't believe I just wrote that but that was my other life).

    Americans are horribly provincial. Well, many of us are.

    As for passports: I think it should be a civil right: ever American should be issued one, free of charge, and freely be allowed to travel abroad. We used to dig on the commies for not letting their citizens have passports. Well, it's expensive to keep up a passport, and we're doing the same thing.

    Everyone should have a right to papers with which they could travel internationally, and there shouldn't be an economic barrier.

    I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.
