    I remember growing up in Detroit and my grandfather (a native North Carolinian) kept a huge lot with a huge vegetable garden right on the corner of a pretty major intersection (Kercheval and Van Dyke just in case there are any Detroiters around!)

    So anything from the value of growing your own food to the spiritual connection with the earth and nature and yard work I grew up with.

    Occasionally, i would take the bus home from school and that garden would be the talk of some of my fellow classmates that went home with me.

    I guess I was a very fortunate one in that even though I was born and raised in a very urban environment, the values that you discuss aren't strange to me at all...I grew up with them.
