    He grew up on a farm that other than during the Depression, was prosperous by African American standards.

    He knew everything about growing vegetables and raising animals -- as a hobby only, though.

    He once told me that the worst thing in the world to be is a "dirt farmer" -- a dirt farmer being a mere crop farmer, as opposed to a dairy farmer, orchard farmer, or anything other than a person who digs in the dirt and relies on weather.
