    there is very little economic spill-over to surrounding areas after these public/private ventures are completed? People drive to the venue, often bringing their own food and tailgating because the cost of tickets is so prohibitive that they can't do anything else, then they watch the event and then they drive away.

    As I see it, practically the sole benefit is to keep the team in the city/state so that the proles won't focus too hard on how frigging horrible and dead end their actual lives are. Life may suck, but "How bout those (fill in team name here)?"
