  •  One of Switzerland's cantons granted Timothy Leary (13+ / 0-)

… political asylum back in the 1970s.

To return Leary to prison, U.S. agents illegally kidnapped him on foreign soil in Afghanistan (in those days, a "hippie paradise" — before the two superpowers ruined things).

Leary was a strange figure for U.S. leaders to be obsessed about as Public Enemy #1. Ultimately, all Leary was doing was speaking and writing books. Apparently, his real crime was setting a bad example for youth.

    •  I didn't know about that. (9+ / 0-)

That's an interesting story.  Why WOULD they waste their time on Timothy Leary?  I guess there may be some weird kind of irrational Puritan ethic in the spy-culture that made Timothy Leary particularly hateable.

When I was a kid, my older brother was in Army Intelligence, with the NCICA.  We would get newsletters at our house while he was off doing whatever shit he was doing for the army back during Vietnam.  I read some of them.  Most of the newsletters were the kind of organizing group photo shot crap that you might expect from a Lion's Club Newsletter.  But then there would be some cheery pep talk piece about how you can identify Communists by how much they hate morality and hate moral, decent people.  Now that I can think of it, I can see how whomever was writing that projecting horseshit for the NCICA newsletter would probably bust a nut trying to get Timothy Leary.

I actually met Timothy Leary once in person, and then again on-line once, back on the Well before Internet browsers came into vogue.  Never really interacted with him.  I had friends back then who were doing daily LSD subclinical threshold dosing who held him in high regard.  I tried to read one of his books but it was either totally incoherent or it was way over my head, maybe both.

    •  That is very interesting. Can you provide me a (1+ / 0-)
