McCartney is indeed a master of melody, and I think you're right about rock critics giving short shrift to melody.  Harmony also sometimes suffers this fate (certainly by record companies, as in the Beach Boys' Heroes and Villains).

was guilty in the past of slighting Brian Wilson.  I was born in 1966 and by the time I was paying attention, he was gone from the Beach Boys, so I thought of them as led by that tool Mike Love, and of course Wilson had fallen on hard, tormented times in the Seventies, when I was paying attention.

But I've been listening to SMiLE all winter, and it blows my mind.  The Beatles and Brian Wilson -- I've been having to pressure myself to listen to anyone else of late.

Wilson can't match The Beatles for the range and volume of great music, but lordy, the man did it by himself -- composer, arranger, producer.  Pet Sounds at 23!  And deaf in one ear.  Such a genius, and so many gifts he has given us.

A 47% return on investment--that's pretty doggoned good!

I saw the Beach Boys in concert last year in White Plains, NY - Brian was in fine form, as was Al Jardine and Mike Love.  Here's my review.  By the way, there's a vid on YouTube of Brian and Paul singing (I think) Wouldn't It Be Nice.
