  •  My sis has a hardy pink hibiscus (8+ / 0-)

She hates plants, flowers, nature. She puts ugly plastic flowers in her stupid flower box. I don't get it. But her hibiscus (planted by her late husband) sits in a part of the yard that gets extreme sun and little water and no love and blooms like crazy.

I've taken starts and never had success. I think it likes the abuse. As I slowly turn a portion of my yard into a xeriscaped area I might try again, put it with the cactus maybe? I swear it's into S and M.

I kind of went crazy buying them (well, since I had all this newly cleared space! LOL) but two that I bought didn't fare well in the pots as they waited to be planted (ok, I admit, I forgot to water them at one point!) I left the pots to the side, and lo and behold, one of them sprouted up this spring.  So I did plant this one.  The other didn't produce any sprouts so at least I could upturn it without any guilt.

Once the roots are established I think they can survive pretty well, but you just have to get it established first!
