    PDs are bad lawyers, and I apologise for that. What I meant was less experienced lawyers are often appointed and poorer people get the rough end of justice more often than not.

      I'm lucky to live in a place where they pay a decent wage to PD's.  Other places make it less doable.  What is nearly universal is the need for more lawyers to ease the caseload, especially in the high-volume misdemeanor courts.  Its not as sexy as the felony and trial cases, but a staggering number of people have had their lives screwed up by "lower" courts.  Most of us can't squeeze in even a year in jail and keep the rest of our lives on any kind of forward trajectory.  Anyway, thanks Clive.
