    and impressed when talk show callers with African-American types of accents began appearing in quantity and being assertive, argumentative, well informed and free to correct guests and hosts etc.

    I never lived in the South or anywhere such extreme policies were enforced; but it's clear from the change in public behavior of Blacks over my lifetime that Blacks had been kept very sternly in a place of broad inferiority. I wouldn't have needed to have known any history to see that much.
