enable SNAP and AFDC to families with two parents.
    PERIOD.
There are programs that require a single-parent household to qualify.
Fine. If you have a widowed or divorced parent.
Not so fine if you have a family with two, say, employed earners at the kind of wages "trumpeted" by Wal-Mart / Burger King.

And the poverty guidelines are about 200% too low for real life. Bare survival? maybe, at best.

Actually, post welfare reform there are not programs that require single parent families to qualify.  TANF (aka welfare) requires a dependent child and "deprivation".  The deprivation can be an absent (and they do mean absent) parent, but also includes an unemployed or underemployed primary wage earner or disabled parent.

While I would LOVE to see more help for low wage workers, like a 100 percent increase in the minimum wage, and continued or expanded SNAP benefits, I think we should be accurate in discussing existing programs.

I work in this area as an administrative law judge.  One of the great problems of existing law and policy is the excessive focus on worthiness and insufficient consideration of need.

Worthiness determinations are expensive.  I think it would cheaper and more effective to focus on what people need without worrying about whether they are deserving.
This diary was spot on in describing "poor hating."

"Saint" Milton Friedman, crappy as many of his other ideas were (sorry, Cariadoc), came up with something worth discussing there.

It was an admission that since it is now necessary to have money to live, it was immoral to condemn people to death for lack of money. And it was a suggestion for how a basic stipend might be made to work within established American traditions and institutions.

Needless to say, it was never implemented except in the most minimally, pitifully, perversely ineffective way (Earned Income Tax Credit) - which requires having had minimal earnings, filing a tax return, and being single (preferably with dependents).

core Libertarian, no matter how good a king he made. But yes, that was one of Friedman's better ideas.

At least half the future I've been expecting hasn't gotten here yet. Sigh.... (Yes, there's gender bias in my name; no, I wasn't thinking about it when I signed up. My apologies.)

just to clue in the mundanes who wonder wtf we're nattering on about. :-D

David (son of Milton) Friedman = MegaDuke Cariadoc of the Bow, KSCA, OL, OP, ETC. Twice king of the Middle, twice king of the East, and I'm not sure he wasn't king elsewhere too. Legend claims he declared war on himself and lost - it didn't happen quite that way, but he was instrumental in starting the Pennsic Wars.

            Has a Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/... and a website http://www.daviddfriedman.com/

Currently at Santa Clara University in the Silicon Valley.
