    Twain, obviously, but also Joel Chandler Harris, wrote fairly accurate representations (in the vowel values of their own day) of Black English, which was/is only a shade away from Plantation Southern dialect that was a prestige dialect. If you hear Son House talk, and you hear Jimmy Carter speak, you'll notice how close the vowels are, how close some of the "woids/wuds" are.

    By the way, Joel Chandler Harris was a progressive in his day. I know that Disney has left us a big old smear, and it's really difficult to see honoring Uncle Remus as an honor, but, in its own day, it was practically unthinkable.
