Whether Americans believe we were founded as a Christian nation or not, most Americans are not churchgoing  or active Christians. At best, they are nominal Christians. Just ask the mainstream denominations how their attendance has been over the past 25 years or so. (It's been crap).

The attendance is high at the crazy fringe churches. My guess--not based on much--is that the right-wing lunatic fringe accounts for about 12-15% of the population. It surges upwards when they're attacking a black President, because America contains more racists than it does wingnuts, and some non-wingnut racists are willing to hang with the wingnuts in order to get a chance to slam Obama. But they don't believe everyone who doesn't attend a right-wing church is going to hell, and they don't believe in government invading their privacy in order to run their personal lives for them along Christian lines (if they did, marriage equality would not be spreading across the land) and they don't believe the right-wing churches should get to write all the laws.

That 12-15% of the population goes to church a lot. Like clockwork. So of course their churches are always full. And they make sure their churches have a high media presence, because they invented them, largely, as a political tool (that's my language). In their language "a weapon against the tide of godless behavior, atheism, and secular humanism that is overtaking this country which was once great."

But no, we're not a Christian nation, and most of us know that. We may have been founded as one, but that's not what was written down in our founding documents, and we know that too.

Unfortunately, our founding documents are being fed through the shredder. The Bible isn't (though the inconvenient parts of it are being ignored.
