And I think that when it's your own diary that they are hide rating you in, it's like having people over to your house and having them shout in your face to shut up.
Being in one's own diary doesn't make a person immune from the consequences of making comments that are HRable according to site rules.

    •  true, which is why my 2 cents (0+ / 0-)

are about changing the site rules for hide rates

      •  Well, I'll read your diary again, but (2+ / 0-)

I'm a bit unclear as to what those proposed changes were.

In your list of things you consider to be "harmful" to this community, would you not also include personal attacks on other members of this site?

Or are those acceptable, as long as you declare them to be just "expressing your opinion" about that person, and/or as long as you have a few others here who share your opinion of that person?

is that most of this community doesn't consider personal attacks on the GOP to be a bad thing.  in fact, it's practically the bread and butter of Daily Kos.  we push our causes and attack the GOP for being pieces of shit.  that's Daily Kos in a nutshell.

now, there is an unspoken rule here on Daily Kos about not making personal attacks on each other, but it's usually circumvented by simply accusing the person you are attacking of not really being on of us.  whether you are accusing them of being 3rd party or a conservadem or a 3rd way dem or whatever.  if they are not us, then they are considered fair game for personal attacks.

which, by the way, is why i opposed Ray's diary about sock puppets so strongly.  as i said in his diary, there are sock puppets here, but proving who they are is almost as hard as proving a negative.  in other words, a pointless exercise.  but Ray was claiming that people can be sock puppets and not even know it.  that means that people can be not one of us and not know it.  and then we can treat them like we treat the GOP.

That's YOUR "unspoken rule," and of those who think similarly, and is absolutely unacceptable as a condoned behavior here. You don't get to determine who's "one of us" and who isn't, and it certainly shouldn't be the determining factor as to whether or not personal attacks on other users are an acceptable way of interacting here.

And it wasn't just that last "sockpuppet" diary, Anton. You know that.

i am saying what IS happening, NOT what SHOULD be.

my comment is about why it's so hard to expect people to not get personal with each other.  it's about human nature.

DeadHead, what you don't seem to get about me, is that i can discuss issues from multiple points of view.  i don't just fight for what i have concluded about an issue.  i talk about it from many sides of the issue.  you keep needlessly arguing with me, because you keep taking what i say and trying to squeeze it into a single simple point of view.

              •  Ok, now that you clarify it (2+ / 0-)

That makes more sense. Your point of reference wasn't clear to me when I first read the comment.

I'm not trying to be argumentative with you just for the sake of doing so. Really, I'm not.

I don't think you're a bad person, and I know you've gone through some things. However, making it your personal mission to save us from Ray Pensador's "evil" influence by engaging in the same type of behavior yourself as you just described above, is not necessary.

So if you see combativeness, it's not done with malicious intent, I'm just trying to figure out where you're coming from -- I keep getting mixed signals, and it becomes frustrating for me.

I'll just leave it at that, so as not to derail you from your diary.

                •  I like Ray Pensador. I dont think hes evil at all. (4+ / 0-)

I think that Ray is a very passionate very intelligent member of this community.  If I understand him correctly, he's what I think can fairly be described as a militant socialist.  I am not a militant socialist, but I respect for the many who are a part of this community.

My issue with Ray, is that I think his eagerness sometimes clouds his judgement and he blurs the line between the socialist world view and his own conspiracy theories.  This is a reality based community and we are not supposed to tolerate conspiracy theories.

Now, to be clear, I don't think that he means to do it.  I think he honestly thinks he is correct.  But, he's a sales person.  It's his job to find a path from A to B.  Usually, it involves some leaps.  Usually, it involves convincing someone he is selling to to take the leap with him.

Based on his writing, I imagine that Ray is very good at his job.   But I think he tries to apply the same kind of thinking to systems and either he doesn't have the depth or the breadth (not sure which it is that he lacks) to see that he's jumping to conclusions.  I think he's so used to jumping that he doesn't see it as a jump.

Look, I overreacted to his diary.  I have a bit of post traumatic crazy religion disorder and when I see people doing what Ray does it makes my insides knot up.  I get really defensive toward this community when it comes to this stuff, because this community is probably the only intellectual community that I have ever found that also has the biggest hearts in the world.  It's usually one or the other.  So, I can go from lovable teddy bear to aggressive protective bear when I feel that something is threatening that.

The crux of the problem? Would it not prevent meta if one seeks clarification from the poster on points that are unclear before posting?

Fear doesn't just breed incomprehension. It also breeds a spiteful, resentful hate of anyone and everyone who is in any way different from you.
