  •  He didn't even have three hidden comments (4+ / 0-)

Thus the time out was arbitrary and automatic only because of certain individuals moving in to hide comments more quickly than others could uprate them. Only one comment was ultimately hidden.

    •  Correction: he did have three hidden comments at (1+ / 0-)

the time the time-out took place. The comment that remains hidden includes both misogyny and accusations of dishonesty. The two that were hidden but resurfaced with upratings accused AdamB of dishonesty.

Apparently the algorithm retains the time-out even if some of the hidden comments re-emerge because of upratings.

Btw, I don't believe I put HR on any of these comments but I can check that if it matters to someone.

Let's look at the larger context, and as far as I am concerned, ignoring context when it comes to making judgmental remarks about someone's behavior is akin to the mandated inflexible sentencing we see in the American justice system (not to make to fine a point with this comparison, I realize this is "just a fucking blog" as someone else said recently).

And I realize there were originally three in the hiddens. That's what I was referring to when I said people hid the comments quicker than others could uprate them. Look at the thread and you will notice there was a lot of disagreement in the community about whether all of the comments merited hide rates.

Here's what I wrote about this elsewhere and you're welcome to read the entire thread there on the topic.

And my god... I've been called a liar for merely disagreeing with a certain group of individuals here and no one hide rated those accusations. I see horrible comments all the time which aren't hide rated. So, realistically, there is a lot of selective cherry picking that goes on every day on this site.

        A couple of upraters (me included) (7+ / 0-)

were sanctioned by admin for uprating one of Ray's comments. I refrained from clicking on the acknowledgement required by the warning banner for two days, which kept me from using most site functions, including making comments, reccing, etc.

When I finally did make the acknowledgement, I noticed that my uprate was still there and couldn't be removed. So it stands. I don't think removal would have put the comment in the hiddens. But even if one more of Ray's comments were hidden, he still would have had two hidden instead of three. And it is unclear if the others who uprated the one comment got a sanction or not. I know Jayray did, and she responded earlier than I and her uprate was removed. The comment is not hidden.

What I find disturbing is that admin's manual involvement, in choosing which uprates to sanction, seemed to be trying to engineer the timeout. And since admin was involved, admin made a choice to leave Ray timed out, even though admin admitted in a comment that they had envisioned potential situations in which privileges might need to be restored if later uprates removed comments from the hiddens. Admin chose to leave Ray timed-out, despite this admission.

So, this was certainly engineered at least to some degree. Shameful abuse of an unequal power relationship, all considered. Ray, I think, has been victimized.

The logic of the call-out was flawed, in that Ray made no specific accusation of individuals, was speaking generally about shills, and the logic that in all probability there are shills on dkos is sound, given what we know about internet shilling, and to assert as if fact that there aren't shills is absurd. The call-out was therefore based on flawed logic, and it unnecessarily ridiculed, goaded, and taunted Ray with a clown picture and distortions of Ray's assertions, making him out to be a conspiracy theorist. Really bad logic on the part of AdamB. It was a shameful display of front pager privilege, and the comment section was filled with personal invective about Ray, as well as pile on hide rates from the usual crowd. There were many personal attacks made in the comments of the call out diary directed at Ray to which he was barred from answering. Ray should not have allowed himself to be goaded by a front pager, but he must have been apoplectic with disgust. As it stands, only one comment was hidden, and in my view there should have been more tolerance from admin and AdamB, all considered, rather than this petty display of bias.

Under the circumstances it is hard to side with the "house" on this, since due to the unequal power relationship between admin, AdamB, the horde of obliging followers on one side, and Ray on the other, Ray was not allowed to respond after the timeout, and had to endure three days of people discussing him publicly in very personal terms while completely helpless to answer.

        •  I didn't call you a liar. I corrected a factual (0+ / 0-)

error, in case people who were not there at the time took away a mistaken impression.

I very rarely accuse people of lying. I wish that were the standard practice around here. Error and carelessness with words are much more common than conscious deceit. I believe in Hanlon's corollary:

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance or incompetence.
