  •  Such a wonderful diary, boatsie! (4+ / 0-)

Growing up as long ago as I did and living on a farm in the Midwest, fireflies, or lightening bugs as we called them, were a beloved part of our summers.

We put them in jars with a couple of tufts of grass and tried to keep them alive.  We tortured them by pinching off their lit-up hind-ends and then smearing it all over our clothes so that we could dance around the yard in phosphorescent glory.

Now, I never see fireflies in Chicago in my backyard or on the streets of my neighborhood. I've seen them in smaller cities like Terre Haute IN and in my rural hometown but they are rare... or my opportunities have been rare.

My most memorable experience was about 35 years ago riding Amtrak from Chicago to Nebraska. At the time, they would open the windows at either end of the cars and we were able to stand and look out over the countryside. We had just gone past an incredible display of lightening strikes and rain off to the north of us. Afterwards, the world began to sparkle.... there were diamonds winking and glinting everywhere, 1000s and 1000s of fireflies there must have been. I still can see that in my mind's eye and I hope I never forget it. I doubt that I will.

My congratulations and deep appreciation to everyone who is doing this wonderful blogathan work. You all are just fabulous!!!
