  •  A friend's young cat, Yuri (4+ / 0-)

(seen here making a confidential remark to a catnip mouse), is the king of that. He suddenly quits what he's doing, fixes his stare on an apparently vacant spot on the wall, and creeps up to it, never wavering. He'll sit there a long damn time, staring and staring. It's sort of unnerving.

    •  It *is* unnerving! (3+ / 0-)

My brother told me of a time when their cat was staring at the wall when he left for work and was in the same spot when he got home (I'm sure the cat must have taken a break at some point!). Turned out to be a bird. Can't remember the outcome, but I'm pretty sure the bird lived :)

Better a bird than a mouse. Several years ago, we had a few mice in the walls. Our cat alerted us. I knew exactly where they were, even though I couldn't hear them.
