  •  You don't think that's cherry-picking? (5+ / 0-)

I'm a left-wing gun control advocate who wants to see universal background checks, licensing, registration, mandatory safety training, mandatory safe storage, and loss/theft reporting requirements.

I also enjoy going to the range about once a month to blow some holes in paper, pretty crappy gun smithing, and collecting older pieces (my Beretta o/u turned 50 this spring, and my Mosin Nagant is 70 this year).

I would vote for some pretty strict controls, but I don't want a total prohibition on ownership. Do you think that makes me unique in all the land? That I'm lying about my goals?

registration and you'll find a lot of agreement with many of the group members. I think Robo is referring (accurately) to the attitudes of many of the more strident voices on the gun control side of the debate. Some of them can be heard occasionally on this very site...

      •  Okay, but the thing about that is... (3+ / 0-)

...the coalition of those of us calling for most/all the measures I listed above would probably fracture pretty hard at the idea of a full-on ban, and in a democratic society (or this reasonable facsimile we got ourselves), that means it's not especially likely to happen.

And when you add in the fact that most RKBAers here* seem to support at least part of that agenda, it makes sense to pursue an incrementalist approach and figure out where we can reach consensus about ways to reduce gun misuse. That's why I tend to reject those pushing a pro-gun absolutism as either thoughtless or paranoid, and why I'm grateful for those here who can admit to holding a middle position or at least resist demonizing everyone who marches out of step.

(* - not to mention most of the people I spoke to the last time I happened to be in the same area as a Maryland Shall Issue/NRA rally)
