someone I know has a history of DWI convictions.  It is illegal to sell my gun to someone I know has a history of felony convictions.

There you go, firearms are already held to a higher standard.  It's just not as high of a standard as you would like.

    •  The don't ask/don't tell of private sales is (3+ / 0-)

a much lower standard don't you think?

Cars have serial numbers, registration, licensing for the operator, and insurance requirements.

Saying that guns are held to a higher standard is really laughable.

      •  Cars only have to be registered if you wish to (1+ / 0-)

operate them on the public roadway.  You're free to not register an automobile operated solely on private property, farmers do it all the time around these parts with their old jalopies that won't pass a safety inspection.

Heck, they're even allowed to cross public right-of-ways (i.e., roads) with their unregistered/uninsured/non-inspected motor vehicles, if crossing said right-of-way is the only way to go from Field A to Field B.

So, do you want to advocate for licensing prior to people being able to carry firearms in the public space?  Guess what?  Most every state (save Vermont, Alaska, Arizona, and I think Utah) already has such a requirement.

    •  DWI convictions come with a heavy toll on driving (3+ / 0-)

an actual car.  You might be able to afford to buy a car but driving it might be another story.
