based on Camillieri's novels, and I love it. I don't think the mysteries are especially strong, but I love the authenticity. They do a wonderful job with Sicilian dialect--all the actors take great care to use dialect words and speak with the correct accent. And I especially love the fact that the less educated the speaker, the stronger the dialect. I also love the way the characters use their hands. (I tried to watch the Commissario Brunetti series but it's not filmed with Italian actors and none of them gesticulate. This just didn't seem Italian to me.)

The Montalbano series DVDs are in my library, though people who get the TV station MHz can see it there--great acting, and shot on location so wonderful scenery. And if for any reason you like to hear the Sicilian dialect, it's heaven.

I love the TV series for the reasons you mention.  The homes and the scenery are wonderful and the actors seem just perfect.  Hubby and I watched them after I had read the books.

I bought the dvds, but I have to say that nothing is covered up...ladies are bare, etc.  So not for the faint of heart.

In the books, though, we learn more about the characters and in one of the later ones when Montalbano cries, I cried with him.

      and some things are funny...
