Hantavirus is relatively rare in Maine, we are more concerned with ticks, lime disease, and of course the mess.

Unfortunately I probably do feed the mice and help them to survive as I have a garden and an orchard, don't always rake up my grass clippings and hadn't opened the roof of the sauna since 1972.

Their nest was very cozy maybe 6" deep by 144 square feet, but I used 8 1.2 % bleach after cleaning and vacuuming so I probably got things at least surface clean.
I had to take off the roof and the roof sheathing to get access which turned into sort of a major project.

The barn is probably much worse, and the house dates to 1825 so I find lots of evidence of rodents and other critters to include grey squirrels, bats, woodchucks, porcupines,  the occasional coyote, skunks, racoons, not to mention the wasps, hornets, various barn swallows, woodpeckers, wild turkey's and other claimants to my grounds.

I put up a fence around the corn patch this year and haven't seen the deer in it yet but its still August.

country oriented lifestyle than I do.  Can't get rid of all the animals in that environment, and who would want to.

The bats, however, are definitely undesirables, as I'm sure you're aware, due to rabies.

mice, rats, snakes in the house; don't mind the owls and woodpeckers in the barn, actually enjoy having most of the rest around, get excited when I see a weasel or bobcat, love red foxes despite where I am the foxes carry the rabies.
