NEVER.  It's never been this way.  I don't what history some folk have been reading...

Last I checked, this is a progressive site, not a regressive one.  So what if it never was?  We still should strive to make it be!

I'm active in politics because I want to make things better, to improve the things that are broken.  I'm active in politics because I read MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail, and thought "I don't want to be one of those white moderates he rails against."  I'm active in politics because so many things are so badly broken, and I want to see them fixed.

Perhaps an argument could be made that the current surveillance state isn't broken (although I have a real hard time seeing it, especially in light of the way it has been used by past and current leaders to crack down on progressive activists), but it is utterly dumbfounding to me that here, on a progressive activist site, people are arguing that changing the system just isn't possible (or, similarly, just isn't worth the effort).  Didn't Markos Moulitsas write a book aiming to refute that thesis?  Something about Gates and the Crashing thereof?
