    At the time, I thought, "Ford's trying to avoid that whole Caesar-at-the-Rubicon thing."

    Pompey and the Optimates hadn't given Caesar an out.  If he stayed in Gaul, he'd be hunted down as a rebel.  If he went back to Rome, he'd be put on trial and probably executed.

    The river Rubicon was the border between Gaul and Italy.  By crossing it with his army, Caesar would be at war with the Optimates.  "Alea iacta est," and all that.

    Like Ford would actually think such things.  It was a done deal when he became VP, a pardon for the presidency.

    Now I'm all in favor of locking up as many corrupt politicians as possible.  Man, have we got a lot of them!
