    ... because it's possible that they've put one of those "can't proceed with the transaction w/o input" systems.

    Around here (the People's Republic of Massachusetts) that's blatantly illegal, so they have a fill-in number they use for everyone who says no.

    Hint to corporations:  If I want your rewards card, I'll sign up.  Otherwise, I won't.  If you ask me more than zip code* on ringing up a transaction, I'll say no.

    * Several smaller chains have been using zip-code for shoppers -- provided voluntarily -- to figure out where to expand to.  If they're getting a lot of people from far away, they know where they should be looking to plant their next store.
