  •  Exactly. A million people living reasonably well (6+ / 0-)

… from their talent in a particular art or sport may produce a better society in the long run than a small number of "stars" who "hit the jackpot" making untold millions.

Ayn Rand admirers, on the other hand, love winner-take-all. It fits their narrative. No levelling! "No time for losers, we are the champions (or would be, if only government would get out of the way)."

these gimmicks have monetized the arts in a very cynical way. Yes, there has always been everything from payola to insane pressure to rewrite that one big hit over and over again. But turning musical performances into an overt and crass contest for the brass ring has always struck me as incredibly wrongheaded, and something that could only be hatched by a non-performer.
Who's the better band, U2 or Led Zeppelin?
      Wrong question.
Who do you like better is the only valid question.

Arts are subjective (past a certain point, at least; if you can't carry a tune, you can't carry a tune) and if somebody is transported by the Dead Kennedys, well, good for them and the Dead Kennedys. It's not up to me or anyone else to determine a score for anyone's performance beyond our own subjective reaction to it., because this is not a game or a contest; it's free and creative expression; a human endeavor that is curtailed by concerns over winning and losing.

      but that's very, very unAmerican.

Saw them at "Rock Against Reagan" at the Lincoln Memorial.

Actually, three questions, all of which you alluded to:

        1) Are they good?
        2) Are they awesome?
        3) Do you resonate with them?

these gimmicks have monetized the arts in a very cynical way.
        I agree absolutely.

I despise battle of the bands stuff, and cannot watch American Idol, or any of the rest. I can't tolerate listening to the celebrities concoct judgements for their own aggrandizement.

To me, music is a team sport, with no opponent.
