    but what I am saying is that the "small stuff" can be very useful or it can completely derail, depending on which side you are, your ability to reach your goal.

    The NSA stuff, among other things, is an issue of credibility and when you ad that to the other stuff you mention the credibility of those leaders gets further eroded. In the end politics is about credibility, you can have the best speech but if you are not credible you don't get the votes.
