adopt a desert tortoise and care for it to help preserve the species.  I have a friend who has had one for ~10 yrs from that program.  The tortoise is still going strong and healthy.  They aren't good pets at all.  He hisses at the family when they feed him, and doesn't seem to care for humans at all,  but that's not the point of the program, and adopters were made well aware of that when signing up to adopt the tortoises.  The point is to save the species, and that is one way to keep it going, even through austerity and sequestration.

Would it be possible to push the adoption program again and get at least some if not all these 700 animals that are destined for euthanasia adopted out? I personally don't know how to push such a program. Does someone here know how?
